The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at the University
of Colorado Denver (UCD) has received a three-year, GAANN (Graduate
Assistance in Areas of National Need) award from U.S. Department of
Education (DoEd) to establish an interdisciplinary doctorate fellowship
program on the topic of Big Data Science and Engineering (BDSE, for
short). With this program, named BDSE Program, while pursuing education
and research in the data science core disciplines (including related
computer science and mathematical/statistical topics), BDSE fellows choose
and pursue one or more of the data science application disciplines (such as
health informatics, geosciences, precision and personalized medicine,
business analytics, smart cities and cybersecurity) where they can apply
their data science study.
Toward that end, each BDSE fellow will be advised by a team of at least two
advisors, one from core disciplines, and one or more from application
disciplines in which the fellow has special interest. This is made possible
by establishing a collaboration between the faculty at the CSE Department
and a number of faculty from other schools and departments across UCD
campus, including School of Medicine (with expertise in precision medicine,
electronic medical records, and *omics data), School of Public Health (with
expertise in health informatics and biostatistics), Business School (with
expertise in business analytics), College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
(with expertise in mathematical and statistical sciences, and geosciences),
and College of Engineering and Applied Science (with expertise in civil
engineering and electrical engineering), to name a few. These faculty
constitute a network of experts from both core and application data science
disciplines that provides mentorship for BDSE fellows with a variety of
The fellowship program will provide financial support for fellows in the
form of tuition & fees, in addition to up to $34,000 annual stipend for
